I was born here and I'll die here against my will
I know it looks like I'm moving, but I'm standing still
Every nerve in my body is so vacant and numb
I can't even remember what it was I came here to get away from
So, tonight I became the world's only Masked and Anonymous-fan. Bob Dylan's "disaster of vanity" turned to be one hell of an enjoyable ride with lots to enjoy for a Dylan-fanatic such as myself.
Sure, structurally and storywise, it's a complete mess. But it's a fascinating and enchanting mess. I also completely adore the choice of using Dylan covers and remixes and such rather than only originals. I laughed out loud at the "Like a Rolling Stone"-hiphop version used in the beginning and thought it was a refreshing proof of non-vanity from Dylan's side (it's so very tempting to think of Dylan himself, and not director Larry Charles, as the brain behind the project that I probably can't stop myself from it even if I should). Still, with the exception of a scene I'll describe below, the best moments of music come when the old versions of great songs that I'm familiar with are used: "Blind Willie McTell" and "Not Dark Yet".
Acting-wise, it's a rollercoaster. With everyone and their grandmother appearing in the movie, it's almost inevitable that it would become more of a game of "spot the celebrity" or, rather, "spot the celebrity chewing the scenery", but it was still fun as hell. And the Big Lebowski-reunion of Bridges & Goodman was a delight. I was just waiting for Bridges to order a white russian or Goodman to start screaming "Over the line!". Mickey Rourke and Val Kilmer are also memorable. Jessica Lange, unfortunately, is pretty much wasted but still a nice presence. And although Penelope Cruz isn't exactly a favorite of mine, her moment of praying before an altar while wearing a "Master of Puppets"-t shirt will certainly stick in my mind. Even Giovanni Ribisi, otherwise no favorite of mine, performs an unexpectedly moving and well-played monologue describing the difficulty of choosing sides in a rebellion such as the one occuring in the movie.
Oh, and before forgetting, I also became very fond of the moment of Luke Wilson and Goodman discussing "Drifter's Escape".
"Oh, help me in my weakness,"
I heard the drifter say,
As they carried him from the courtroom
And were taking him away.
"My trip hasn't been a pleasant one
And my time it isn't long,
And I still do not know
What it was that I've done wrong."
As for Dylan's own acting skills, well, there is probably a reason he keeps as low-key as he does. That voice still is a force to be reckoned with though, in speech as well as song (and combined with that grim, chiseled face), and therefore he definitely holds my interest whenever he's on screen. However, he's low-key, he's non-emotional, much like the man himself seems to be. And when supposedly becoming angry and aggressive near the end, the scene is cut in a way suggesting the acting may not have been satisfactory.
However, he does cry. Relatively believably.
Most stunning though, was the moment of the little girl singing "The Times They Are A-Changin'". I've heard the song a thousand times, but tonight everything old became new again. And combined with the stunning beauty concealed in the voice of this smiling and charming little girl... it gave me goosebumps and I felt tears in my eyes. A great performance of a great song in a great scene in a (momentarily, at least) great movie.
So in the end, it's saddening to me that the movie was so universally panned, and I'm actually hoping that Dylan will embark on another "disaster of vanity" sooner rather and later.
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin'
