Jag vet inte rikigt vad det var som gjorde det, men från att Reed Diamonds samaritkaraktär dök upp i Alisons dröm i förtexterna, kröp det en hel del under huden på mig. Effektivt värre.

Psychic Housewife
The mother of all TV sleuths
If it weren't for all the dead people and creepy criminals she keeps seeing in her nightmarish dreams, Allison DuBois could be this generation's Samantha Stephens. The cranky psychic heroine of Medium is bewitched, all right. Bothered and bewildered, too. And she even has her own little Tabitha-like daughters who also have the "gift."
"I didn't want it and I didn't ask for it, and sometimes I wish I didn't have it," Allison (Patricia Arquette) whines during a rare fight with her usually supportive husband Joe (Jake Weber), who, like Darrin on Bewitched, sometimes just gets fed up with his wife's eccentricities.
Medium, inspired by the real-life DuBois' exploits, could so easily have been a comedy. In my favorite episode to date, Joe plotted feverishly to plan a birthday surprise for a woman "who's always one step ahead."
Instead, the show settles for being the year's most inventive twist on the ubiquitous crime drama. (CBS' Numbers is a near-tie.) When Allison isn't busy with Joe and their three kids, she's working as a secret weapon for the Phoenix district attorney's office.
Secret because if the DA let it be known that he was following leads from a psychic's dreams and visions, he'd be laughed out of a job.
Medium works on many levels. Arquette's edgy and deglamorized performance captures Allison's deep ambivalence toward her powers. The balance between realistically chaotic home life and dangerously surreal work life is entertaining and provocative.
Now if only Allison would start twitching her nose....

She's a Psychic Soccer Mom
Allison DuBois is a suburban working mom who has violent visions of murders and routine chats with the dead. But that's not what's most unusual about her. What's really weird is that the lead character on NBC's hit show Medium is the most realistic woman on TV.
DuBois is neither a Pilates-lean, dressed-to-kill Wisteria Lane housewife nor an immaculately coiffed crime-scene investigator. As Patricia Arquette, the actress who portrays her, puts it, "She's a psychic soccer mom."
The soccer moms relate. So do the other women of America who make up over 60 percent of the 15-million-strong audience tuning in to Medium every Monday night.
Yes, the character of Allison DuBois is based on an actual housewife with the same name. She's also psychic, lives in Phoenix and uses her powers to help crack criminal cases. However, Arquette chose not to go the imitation route. You won't see her sporting the real DuBois' dramatic two-tone hair or channeling her animated personality — not this season at least. She had her own ideas about how she wanted to represent the character.
"I wanted to play a woman who looks really normal," says Arquette, 36, as she strolls across the Medium set in a funky blue bathrobe your mom might wear. "Her body shape is regular. Her makeup is very minimal."
And why are those details so important? Because it's how her character — a happily married, working mother of three — should look. "It would say a lot about her parenting skills if she took a ton of time to get herself ready in the morning," Arquette declares. "And that's part of what people respond to. They know I didn't take four hours to train with someone and three hours to put on makeup."
